In the winter of 2016 I had the opportunity to embed myself with the Showcases R&D group at Microsoft’s head office to help design and deliver one of the world’s first holographic mixed reality applications.

Transitioning from traditional UX/UI patterns to a world that simply went beyond the confines of traditional screens presented a set of unique challenges.
On the end user side, balancing the desire to present movie magic that must at its very core provide affordances that encompass, sound, motion and physical space. On the design side, understanding that without the structure of a screen you need to approach each interaction between user and hologram like you’re framing a shot in a film.
