Design as a Legacy.
“Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there. ”
It was my birthday yesterday. Another year older, another year wiser. As I move through life I often wonder what my design legacy will be. Working in this industry is challenging, rewarding and truly wonderful. I try to (when I have time between projects) challenge myself by working on personal design projects.
Some of the most meaningful work starts as something inherently personal. Which is why I wanted to share Real Characters with you.
The project is about preserving legacy through handwriting, something that really resonated with me. It's important for designers to understand where the act of creating type comes from. All too often the idea of things being handmade becomes lost. The value of knowing where you come from helps to arrive at where you are going. Read more about the project and purchase any of the typefaces created, for $2.00 with the proceeds going to the nursing home.
